After a young married man (Casey Affleck) dies in a car accident, his spirit returns home---cloaked in a bedsheet with two melancholy eyeholes. Unseen by anyone, he watches, over the course of several years, the life of his wife (Rooney Mara) and subsequent occupants of the house unfold. Writer/director David Lowery presents an original, moody vision of grief and the passage of time in a very unconventional manner. Even the dimensions of the image you see is different: a square with rounded edges, much akin to an old photograph.
