DARKEST HOUR

(PG13 2017 125 min.)

It's 1940, the year of Britain's greatest peril from the Nazi menace, and newly appointed Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) must decide whether to attempt a negotiated peace with the Germans or stand firm and fight. With loyal support from his wife (Kristin Scott-Thomas) and secretary (Lily James), he resists any temptation to bow to tyranny. Director Joe Wright endows this pristinely produced historical drama with original and fresh insight and affords Oldman (heavily made-up, sporting layers of padding) the chance to exude a wicked wit and compassionate heart as Churchill.

One Golden Globe nomination & win: Best Actor (Gary Oldman)
