ABOUT US
Red River Theatres formed in response to the closing of Concord’s two independent theaters in the mid-1990s. After these closures, community members felt the loss of cinemas that offered an alternative to the standard fare provided by the region’s several multi-screen movie theaters.
To help anchor the arts and provide a film experience unrivaled in the region, many dedicated volunteers joined together to translate their dreams into reality. In 2000, Red River Theatres was formed around the goal of developing an independent movie house in downtown Concord. Founding volunteers named the organization after “Red River,” a classic, 1948 Western starring John Wayne, in which the lead characters undertake an epic, nearly impossible, but ultimately successful, journey.
Following the grand opening on October 19, 2007, Red River Theatres, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, is excited to be able to realize its mission full-time: “To present film and the discussion of film as a way to entertain, broaden horizons and deepen appreciation of life for New Hampshire audiences of all ages.”
Red River Theatres
- Operates a community-based cinema that presents films of social and artistic merit that would otherwise not be shown in the region;
- Promotes independent films, particularly those made in New England;
- Introduces audiences to filmmakers through discussions; and,
- Provides a permanent location in downtown Concord where the pursuit of artistic excellence in film takes precedence over commercial appeal.
Red River’s three-screen theater is located in the lower two levels of the Capital Commons building at 11 South Main Street in Concord. Two of the theaters provide stadium seating and are equipped with 35mm projection equipment and Dolby surround sound. The larger of the two theaters, the Lincoln Financial Cinema, seats 156 individuals; the smaller theater, the Stonyfield Farm Culture Cinema, has seating for 109. Both theaters also include an area for live performances and lectures. The third theater, the Jaclyn Simchik Memorial Cinema, is a screening room and multi-function hall with a 48-seat capacity and DVD projection equipment. This space can be used for smaller presentations and may be rented out for meetings and receptions.
After seven years and through the amazing support of the community, Red River Theatres is finally a stunning venue! With more than $1.72M raised in our capital campaign prior to opening and only $95,000 to go, the theater is on its way to a successful future.
