1,700 show up to see 'The War Tapes'

Roughly 1,700 people turned out in Concord last weekend to see The War Tapes.

The documentary, shot by a handful of soldiers from the New Hampshire Army National Guard, has received rave reviews from The New York Times and other media outlets.

It won the best documentary award at the Tribeca Film Festival in April.

The local showings were sponsored by Red River Theatres. Roughly 850 people attended opening night at the Capitol Center for the Arts, according to spokesman Ric Waldman. The Capitol Center holds 1,300 people. The average attendance for a movie at the Capitol Center is between 100 and 200 people, he said.

The movie had 11 showings, including five each on Saturday and Sunday. About 470 tickets were sold Saturday, and 400 were sold Sunday, said Barry Steelman of Cinema 93, who sold the tickets.
